On Wednesday November 2, I boarded a flight bound to Bismarck, North Dakota via Denver, Colorado. By the time I made the connection in Denver, I was aware of how many clergy were also on their way to answer the call to stand with Standing Rock in opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). So many people wearing collars promoted the flight attendant to ask me where we were going. I responded that this was the clergy responding to a call to “Stand with Standing Rock.” She said, "I knew it! I told the pilot, but he didn't believe me.” In almost every seat, there was a clergy person.

As a child growing up in the 1960s, I had a fascination with Europe of the 1930s and 40s. I remember hearing about children in Norway during World War II who hid gold in their sleds and flew past the Nazis to give support to the Resistance. I was inspired by both their courage as well as their imagination. The Diary of Anne Frank haunted my elementary school self.
