The custom of reading lessons from Holy Scripture along with psalms was adopted by the Christian Church from the synagogue pattern of Jewish worship. The lectionary in the back of The Book of Common Prayer provides a three-year cycle of lessons intended to allow regular church-goers the opportunity to hear most of the Bible over a period of three years.
The Revised Common Lectionary that we use today was developed in cooperation with other Christian churches, so you will usually find these same lessons at Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ and Roman Catholic churches.
